“It’s all about sex with Hefner, isn’t it?” – John Peel

Hefner’s unique brand of lo-fi indie folk made them a staple of John Peel’s show in the late 1990s, when they often took high rank in the annual Festive 50 chart voted for by the legendary broadcaster’s devoted listeners. Released on vinyl for the first time, this is the group’s first Peel session, featuring a Beach Boys cover plus three early Hefner songs – and free downloads of the original BBC files and a set of postcards featuring early gig flyers designed by Darren.

I Can Travel Through Time – Darren Hayman – 10 track 33 rpm 7 inch

This is an album, but it is not an album. Released on a 33rpm seven inch, this record features ten songs, some less then a minute long. It is released on Formosa Punk Records on 24th April 2020.

The record acts as an epilogue or side bar to Darren’s new full-length record later this year, Home Time on Fika Records. Both records are concerned with break ups but more importantly the emotional retreat we need to recover from these things.

‘When I’m hurt I want to be small. I want to be unnoticed. During the making of Home Time I was imposing restrictions on myself to make the music smaller, limiting to 8 track, acoustic instruments,’ says Darren.

After making the album Darren though further about these ideas of retreat and going into hiding. ‘I thought another way to make the songs even smaller is to make them literally small. I wrote 13 tiny pieces, barely a verse and a chorus, but every one of them said what I needed it to. I chose the best ten for the record.’

The record was made in one day at East London’s Soup Studios with a band consisting of Emma Kupa (bass – Standard Fair, Mammoth Penguins), Patrick Ralla (Rocking Birds, Hanging Stars) and Johnny Helm (The Wave Pictures).

The seven inch is limited to 300 copies, 100 for Japan and 300 for the UK. It is available through Hayman’s own website hefnet.com and a very few select shops.

The digital release will include 23 tracks including demos of every song and three extra songs. It will be available through all usual digital outlets. The physical copy comes with a download link to this version.

Side A: 1. Blue Suitcase 2. You Are Still My Password 3. I Want to be a Dot 4. Want Doesn’t Get 5. Gold in a Box

Side B: 1. Do You Think I Would Again 2. Brown Paper 3. Make It Disapear 4. A Family 5. On the Edge of Things

Physical copies sold out. Sorry.

Outstairs Instairs by Papernut Cambridge (vinyl and CD set)

(Papernut Cambridge is a band in which Darren plays drums, bass, keyboards and saxophone in).

Here Ian Button returns with a core of Papernut regulars plus additional friends and collaborators, and perhaps the most introspective and direct Papernut Cambridge album so far. There’s both flippancy and openness here in a set of songs that mix topics such as self doubt in love, agoraphobia, stealing a dog from Battersea Dogs’ Home, St Peter’s admin troubles in Heaven, father-to-son advice and more. There’s fun, hooks and tunes…but also mortality……stoicism….a kind of spirituality…….all set against music and arrangements that span sunshine guitar pop, Hunky Dory-esque piano flourishes, tearful pub ballads, baggy country glam, even psych boogie woogie.

Outstairs Instairs takes its title from inventor/architect Richard Buckminster Fuller’s idea for a more astronomically accurate way of describing going up or down stairs i.e. outwards from the centre of the earth, or inwards towards it. On the vinyl version, side one plays from the centre outwards, side two from the outside in.

12″ vinyl LP pressed on 140g black vinyl. Side A is an INSIDE OUT cut (plays from the centre label outwards), and side B is cut normally. The LP comes in a brown paper inner sleeve and reverse board outer sleeve (green artwork) with an A4 card lyrics insert.

Includes a CD version of the album.

Trains by Darren Hayman (CD)

I’ve tried a couple of times to group together some train related songs. Recently I was asked to write a song about my favourite train which is the Class 108 Diesel Multiple Unit. I like it because you can see out of the front window.

Making this song inspired me to revisit some old train songs I had and prepare them for release.

The picture disk has sold out from me but I still have the CD version with 8 new songs.

Here’s a video for ‘Class 108 Diesel Multiple Unit’.
